The idea of a so called Great Year is almost as old as civilization itself. Plato referred to it in his TIMAEUS, but did not ad a specific time frame or calendar to it. His processor Heraclites did, although according to Censorius Heraclites’ Great Year was 10.800 years in length and 18.000 according to Aetius. Diogenes of Babylon calculated the Great Year by multiplying Heraclites’ Great Year by 360 = 6.480.000 years. Other Greeks like Philolaus the Pythagorean and Aristarchus made up their own calculations. Before the ancient Greek the Babylonians and Persians new the Great Year concept and most familiar of course are the Yuga’s in India.

There were 4 Yuga’s: Krita Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dwapara Yuga and Kali Yuga. Their length measured in Divine Years were 4800, 3600, 2400 and 1200 years, conversed to human perception this gives 1.728.000, 1.2969.000, 864.000, 432.000 years. Kali Yuga should have started at 3102 BC.

Of course this is all arbitrary nonsense. Much more interesting are the predictions from the Hopi and Maya’s that at least have a verifiable prophetic and realistic value. European writers like Victor Hugo, Baudelaire, Goethe, Nietzsche and later Sprengler, Rene Guenon and Julius Evola had strong feelings of and end time and the latter two conceptualized Kali Yuga into clear, visionary post-Sprenglerian philosophies that have not lost any of it’s actuality for today’s culture critics.

Although many Pluto like and Trans-Neptunian planets have been discovered recently as Varuna, Makemake, Sedna etc. and degree and sign-shifts by the Black Sun (51 years and Galactic Centre (72 year for one zodiacal degree, 2160 for one sign) are certainly strong Zeitgeist-indicators, they do not explain this kind of turbo-status homo sapiens has arrived in at the end of the Renaissance, almost exponentially speeding up development, that is almost exclusively speeding up technical development and not social development, half way the 19the century up to now. The general terms for this end sprint are modernism and post-modernism (for those who have at least the awareness we are more or less lost but still have not firmly rooted any substantial alternative for the current metaphysics of modern society, the Americanized loops of mega-pollution and general self-destruction.

What ever Kali Yuga is, as an astrologer I can clearly distinguish strong parallels between the psychospherics of a now very well documented and easy to understand phenomenon as the Black Moon and the end days of a several thousands year old human development that in modernism has its very core of human ingredients (in the semantic understanding of ‘human’) tested by the techne, technology, the artificial, and the way the artificial way of life infiltrates every other facet of life. Even the most natural aspects of life, like our food intake, sex and social communication are infiltrated by technology, by E-numbers and genetic modification, by condoms and dissecting women’s periods from the Moon, by facebook and twitter. In my Dutch book Nulpunt Psychologie I wrote detailed about the correspondences between Black Moon and Kali Yuga’s end days. But the point is that we are collectively facing our most cunning and powerful tester ever, our Waiter on the Threshold XXXL. It’s either technology and systems that rule man or man that starts to rule technology and system and learns to change the potency and impact of modern technology from the kind of cancer it has become into symbiotic relations. No God will help us. Our brains and hand will have to do the job and 2012 is only a symbol. Otherwise (in Hopi-terminology) we will remain exactly the opposite of the ones we have been waiting for, Americanized assholes, instead of human beings who leave something livable to their children and Mother Nature.
